Artist statement
An emotional response to the landscape.
Originally from the northwest of the country I have been privileged to live in an area of outstanding beauty, the Peak District. Being surrounded by rugged hills, tumbled down stone walls and craggy wind swept trees, there was no surprise that these were my inspiration to paint the landscape.
I relocated to Norfolk in 2002. By comparison the Norfolk landscape is a complete contrast, a relatively flat, softer, gentler landscape with huge sky’s. Perhaps not as dramatic but equally as interesting in a different way
Fascinated by how ones eyes can travel for miles without interruption, the colour shifts of the farmers fields as the crops ripen from cool greens to warm golds. The ever moving cloud formations, as they cross paths and release their heavy burden on unsuspecting fields. The vastness of it all leaves me breathless.
I aim to capture the texture and movement that’s ever present in this constantly changing landscape. I mostly sketch and paint plein air reacting to what lies before me, using acrylic inks and acrylic paint. Then back to the studio to develop the work into larger paintings. Laying down loose acrylic paint with expressive brush marks. Using a variety of unconventional tools I draw into puddles of paint with coloured inks to create Interesting reactions. I Scratch and scrape into the surface this reflects the history of mankind’s mark of what has gone before.
